They will sing at night next to streetlights. Size 14 cm Yellowhammer It favours open country, farmland with hedges, heaths, bushy commons and young plantations. In winter more on fields with stubble and root crops. Size 16.5 cm Treecreeper The treecreeper is small, very active, bird that lives in trees. It likes parks and gardens with mature trees. Size 12.5 cm Nuthatch It breeds in central and southern England and in Wales, and is resident, with birds seldom travelling far from the woods where they hatched. They can be found in mature deciduous woods, especially large oak woods, wooded parks and gardens. Size 14 cm Goldfinch Often breeds near man in parks, gardens, nurseries, orchards and churchyards. Increasingly they are visiting birdtables and feeders. Size 12 cm Starling Noisy and gregarious, starlings spend a lot of the year in flocks. Still one of the commonest of garden birds. Large numbers arrive in autumn to spend the winter here. Size 21.5 cm Greenfinch Parks and gardens with evergreen shrubs and a ready supply of birdtable food make them common in towns and villages. Size 15 cm Waxwing Winter visitor in varying numbers (but usually scarce) mainly to eastern half of England and Scotland. Occurs where berry-bearing trees are found, including hedgerows, parks and gardens. Size 18 cm Wren Widespread and abundant resident found everywhere from large cities to remote off-shore islands. Populations can crash after severe winters, but currently one of our most abundant birds with about 10 million pairs in Britain and Ireland. Can be found anywhere there is low cover - woods, hedges, gardens, srcub, sea-cliffs, mountains, reedbeds, etc. Size 9 - 10 cm Tree Sparrow Mostly nest in holes, and therefore found in mature wooded areas, or where cliffs or quarries provide suitable nest sites or large gardens, especially where nest boxes are provided. Marked decrease in population in recent years. Size 14 cm Song Thrush Widespread but declining resident and some birds from the continent arrive as winter visitors. Size 23 cm Pied Wagtail Occurs in a wide variety of open places including fields, farmyards, parks, meadows, and shows a preference to the vicinity of water. They gather together in large roosts, sometimes in towns, often assembling on roofs beforehand. Size 18 cm Redwing The redwing is most commonly encountered as a winter bird and is the UK’s smallest true thrush. Hedgerows and open country. Sometimes visits gardens especially in hard weather. Size 21 cm March tit Despite it's name, found in woods, especially open oak-wood, hedgerows, copses and more rarely in gardens. Breeds in ready-made tree holes (and nest boxes). It’s numbers are in decline. Size 11.5 cm House Sparrow Breeds mainly in roofs and holes in buildings, often in colonies. Will also take over nests of House Martins and Sand Martins, sometimes evicting the rightful owners. Equally at home in city centres and farmland, never far from man. Size 14.5 cm Hawfinch The UK's largest finch, it has a massive, powerful bill. They can be found in deciduous and mixed woodland, parkland, orchards and large gardens, especially where hornbeam, poplar or cherry are present. Size 18 cm Fieldfare Fields, open country and hedgerows. Visits gardens in hard weather. They begin to arrive from October and numbers build up as the winter progresses. Birds start to return in March and some may stay into May. Size 25 cm Carrion Crow Found in almost all kinds of habitat from remote mountains to city centres. Size 47 cm Chaffinch Anywhere with trees or bushes from city centre parks to remote woodlands. Common garden birds. Size 14 - 16 cm Blackbird A very wide variety of habitats - almost everywhere except barren uplands. Familiar in gardens and city parks. The bright orange-yellow beak and eye-ring make adult male blackbirds one of the most striking garden birds. One of the commonest UK birds, its mellow song is also a favourite. Size 24 - 25 cm Blue Tit the Blue tit can be found in deciduous and mixed woodland, gardens, parks and hedgerows. Nests in holes in trees and buildings and readily uses nest boxes. Frequent visitor to bird tables, especially where peanuts are provided. Size 12 cm Bullfinch Can be found in Woodland edges, hedgerows, orchards and large gardens. Size 15 cm Siskin Breeds in conifers. In winter found in birches and alders, banks of streams and will visit gardens for peanuts.
