Frosty the Snowman Tea Cosy


Frosty the Snowman Tea Cosy Frosty the Snowman, was a jolly happy soul. Frosty the snowman may be made from snow and ice but he has a very warm hearted and this helps to keep your teapot extra warm at Christmas time. This cute snowman is a bit tricky to knit because it requires some shaping.

To make the Snowman tea cosy you will need...
4.00 mm, UK size 8 or US size 6 knitting needles,
3.75 mm, UK size 9 or US size 5 Knitting needles,
50g White double knitting wool,
Oddments of double knitting wool, including orange and black,
3 large buttons,
A drinking straw with a bendy bit,
and three pom-poms.

Divide the white ball of wool into two balls so that the yarn can be used in double thickness but knitted up as a single strand.

The Back
Using 5.5 mm, UK size 5 or US size 9 knitting needles and double thickness white yarn cast on 28 stitches and work 38 rows in straight garter stitch (Knit each row)

Leave the stitches on a spare needle until later.

The Front Work as the same as back but do not put on a spare needle.

The Tea Cosy Top
Using white double yarn proceed to knit across the tea cosy front and then tea cosy back as follows...

Shaping the top Row 1: *K5, K2 tog* repeat to end

Next and every alternate row Knit.

Row 3: *K4, K2 tog* repeat to end.
Row 5: *K3, K2 tog* repeat to end.
Row 7: *K2, K2 tog* repeat to end.
Row 9: *K1, K2 tog* repeat to end.
Row 11: *K2 tog* repeat to end.

Thread the end of the yarn through the remaining stitches and through the loop of the yarn itself and draw up the knitting tightly and Finnish off.

With the front and back right sides together, sew about 9.5cm from the finishing off point, down the side seam towards the cast on edge.

At the bottom of each side seam, sew about 3cm upwards. The holes are left for the teapot handle and spout.

The Snowman's Head
With 5.5 mm, UK size 5 or US size 9 knitting needles and double thickness white yarn cast on 8 stitches.

Row 1: Inc in every stitch

Next and every alternate row Knit.

Row 3: *K1, Inc in net stitch* repeat to end
Row 5: *K2, Inc in net stitch* repeat to end
Row 7: *K3, Inc in net stitch* repeat to end
Row 9: *K4, Inc in net stitch* repeat to end

Knit 13 rows straight.

Decrease Head

Row 23: *K4, K2tog* repeat to end
Row 25: *K4, K2tog* repeat to end
Row 27: *K4, K2tog* repeat to end
Row 29: *K4, K2tog* repeat to end

Thread the end of the yarn through the remaining stitches and through the loop of the yarn itself and draw up the knitting tightly and Finnish off. Sew the row ends together, turn and stuff and close the opening at the bottom. Sew into place at the top of the Tea Cosy base.

Snowman's Nose
With 4.00 mm, UK size 8 or US size 6 Knitting needles and orange wool cast on 10 stitches.

Knit for rows in stocking stitch.

Row 5: K2 tog, K2, K2 tog, K2, K2 tog

Next and every alternate row purl.

Row 7: K2, K2 tog, K2, K2 tog
Row 9: *K2 to* repeat to end

Thread the end of the yarn through the remaining stitches and through the loop of the yarn itself and draw up the knitting tightly and Finnish off. Sew the row ends together, turn and stuff and sew into place in the middle of the snowman's face.

With black wool embroider on eyes and a mouth.

Snowman's Hat
With 4.00 mm, UK size 8 or US size 6 knitting needles cast on 60 stitches and work 6 rows rib (*K1, P1* to end)

Change colour and work another 10 rows in stocking stitch (one row K, one row P) If you are making a stripy hat, two rows make one stripe.

Decrease hat
Keeping stripes correct continue...
Row 1: *K1, K2 tog* repeat to end

Next and every alternate row Purl

Row 3: *K2 tog* repeat to end
Row 5: *K2 tog* repeat to end
Row 7: *K2 tog* repeat to end

Thread the end of the yarn through the remaining stitches and through the loop of the yarn itself and draw up the knitting tightly and Finnish off. Sew the row ends together, and sew a pom-pom to the top of the hat.

Snowman's Scarf
With 4.00 mm, UK size 8 or US size 6 knitting needles cast on 8 stitches

Work 110 rows in stocking stitch.
Thread the end of the yarn through the remaining stitches and through the loop of the yarn itself and draw up the knitting tightly and Finnish off and sew a pom-pom onto the end. Gather up the other end of the scarf with running stitches and add a pom-pom.

Walking Stick
With 4.00 mm, UK size 8 or US size 6 knitting needles and black wool cast on 30 stitches

Work 4 rows in garter stitch
Cast off.

Cut the drinking straw 1cm from bend on the short end and 11cm from the bend at the long end. Sew the black knitting around this piece of drinking straw, and bend the straw to form a walking stick shape.

Sew about 4.5cm of the middle of the stick to the snowman. The rest of the stick stands proud of the tea cosy.
